Description :

Hail Mary? examines the sexist and misogynist themes that underlie the socially constructed religious imagery of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Maurice Hamington explores the sources for three prominent Marian images: Mary as the "the blessed Virgin," Mary, the "Mediatrix"; and Mary, "the second Eve." Hamington critiques these images for the valorization of sexist forces with the Catholic Church that serve to maintain systems of oppression against women. In challenging dominant, religious representations of Mary, Hamington surveys a variety of emerging reinterpretations of Mary. He then provides a framework for further study of "non-alienating" images of Mary.

Description :

Maryel Locke and Charles Warren present twelve original essays by film critics, filmmakers, theologians, and philosophers that examine the 1985 film Hail Mary, directed by Jean-Luc Godard, and its companion film, The Book of Mary, directed by Anne-Marie Miéville. (The films are collectively released under the title Hail Mary.) The interpretative essays offer a rich spectrum of analysis and opinion representing many divergent points of view about critical theory, the status of women, and the value of film as a medium. Locke and Warren also include two important interviews with Godard, brief biographies and complete filmographies of Godard and Miéville, a short breakdown of the two films including the English subtitles, and the script of the French dialogue to complete a remarkably comprehensive treatment of this important film. The only film based on the biblical story of the Virgin Mary, Godard’s Hail Mary is a contemporary Swiss/French representation of Mary’s virgin pregnancy, the birth of her son, and her relationship with Joseph and her young child. Miéville’s companion film is about a young girl named Mary whose parents get a divorce. While neither film is overtly religious, the initial release of Hail Mary brought public protests, court cases, a physical attack on Godard, and condemnation by the Pope.

Sixteen years is a long time. In a marriage, it’s a milestone. On the gridiron, it’s a miracle. Reed Johnson wants more time for everything, but time is funny that way. It can be cruel. With a body that can’t quite take the hits it used to and a heart tired of being torn in two different directions, Reed is faced with a reality he’s not quite ready for—life without the game. He became a man under Friday night game lights and in college stadium tunnels, and without the grit and the glory that’s earned ten yards at a time, he’s afraid of what kind of man he’ll be. But there’s more than a game at stake now. Reed’s wife, Nolan, is afraid too. She’s seen what can happen when the love of her life pushes himself too hard, and she can’t escape the nightmares she relives after almost losing her entire world to one single play on the field. There is no compromise when it comes to football. Same goes for the heart. You’re either all in, or you get crushed. For Reed and Nolan, the clock is ticking down. Time…it does that. One way or another, they’re going to have to make a choice. This is their hail Mary. This is win or lose. (The Hail Mary is book 3 in The Waiting Series, which follows high school sweethearts Reed Johnson and Nolan Lennox through football, life, love and everything messy that goes along with it. The series begins with Waiting on the Sidelines and Going Long.)

It has also a divine origin, for each of its three parts has been taught by God Himself. The first part, "Hail (Mary), full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women," was the greeting which the angel Gabriel, God's special messenger to the virgin Mary, addressed to her (Luke 1:27,28). The second part, "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb (Jesus)" (5:41,42), was the reply Saint Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Ghost," made to Mary's greeting. And the Catholic Church, "the Church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:15), founded by Jesus Christ and guided by the Holy Ghost, "the Spirit of truth" (John 15:26), has added the third part, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen."Therefore, when we recite the Hail Mary, we salute, venerate and exalt Mary as "the Mother of God" (Luke 1:43) with the very words which God Himself addressed to her through the angel Gabriel, His faithful ambassador, for the accomplishment of the mystery of the Incarnation of His divine Son; we congratulate Mary in the words the Holy Ghost inspired Saint Elizabeth to utter, for being exalted above all creatures as the Mother of Him who "is called the Son of the Most High" (Luke 1:32). Then with the in fallible Church of the Son of God, we invoke and beseech Mary, His divinely chosen Mother, to help us, to "pray for us," weak and frail and sinful mortals, both in life and at the hour of our death, that we, too, may be admitted to see, praise and love her divine Son and her forever in heaven.

Are you tired of going through the motions and feelings as though you have more to offer this world? Have people stereotyped you and, maybe, you have made their words about you a self-fulfilling prophecy? Escape the labels and titles projected on you by people and through faith, expect an encounter with destiny. Your life is about to change and you can thank God for it! - Ivory Bostick, Senior Pastor, Tree of Life Worship Center “Hail Mary” is a timely and revelatory book. It is written at a time when God is releasing His glory in the earth through His people. In order for this to happen, it is paramount that believers know who they are. They must know Christ, know that He dwells in them and that they are empowered by the power of the Highest. “Hail Mary” comes to ignite and rekindle that knowledge in believers so that, like Mary, what God has put in us produces a sound that releases His glory in the saved and to the unsaved. - Sandra Jones, Associate Pastor, Tree of Life Worship Center

“Hardy har har,” Wynn retorted. “How did it happen?” “How did what happen?” The growl in his voice probably cowed a great many folks. She didn’t happen to be one of them. Even if he was big and intense and talked about delivering death like it was the mail. “Your leg.” He didn’t respond. Instead, he stood at the sink and stared out into the storm. “Is it a state secret?” she wanted to know. “A matter of national security? An injury suffered while on a clandestine mission that you can’t talk about under penalty of death? Did they make you swear on a Bible?” “You’re a piece of work,” he said. “I know.” When he turned to glower at her, she smiled. “It’s a gift.” His gaze fell to her mouth, and awareness speared through her, a hot, electric slide that made her cheeks burn. He was attracted to her, the same way she was attracted to him. And he didn’t like it. Not one bit. You and me both, bucko. ***** When a local bank robbery brings newly elected Sheriff Beau Greystone to Wynn Owens’ front door, she has only two things to give him: the endless bounty of her caustic wit and a one-finger salute. Wynn has history with the law, none of it good. And the notion that one of her elderly tenants might have something to do with the robbery is just plain crazy. A former DEA agent, Beau owes his newly minted badge solely to his meddling aunt and his own foolish indifference. Recovering from the murder of his wife—and the debilitating injury caused by the explosion that killed her—Beau has been happily checked out for some time. But the people of Blossom Hills are counting on him to do his job, and bringing a bank robber to justice is a fine place to start…until the killer that's haunted the town for the last decade abruptly returns. Wynn has a tenant to exonerate;Beau, a killer to catch. Neither is prepared for the compelling but unwelcome current between them, or the unexpected circumstances that will force them to reassess the rules by which they live. But the clock is ticking, and they must decide: adapt and evolve, or surrender to the past and the dark malevolence that has risen within it…. A dark, edgy, steamy thriller with captivating characters you won't forget...contemporary romantic suspense at its best.

Taut, compelling, and remarkably assured, Hail Mary Corner thrusts readers into unfamiliar territory past an emotional frontier we all must cross: the uncertain ground between adolescence and adulthood. High on a cliff above a pulp-mill town on Vancouver Island, sixteen-year-old Bill MacAvoy and his friends lead cloistered lives while other boys their age run free. it may be the fall of 1982, but inside the walls of their Benedictine seminary they inhabit a medieval world steeped in ritual and discipline–a place where blackrobed monks move like shadows between doubt and faith. Isolated from the outside, Bill and his friends develop a unique and often hilarious culture. Schooled in the virtues of sacrifice and service, they instead learn to challenge, resist, and wield power over one another’s lives. On the road to certain expulsion, Bill discovers two secrets: one concerns Brother Thomas, the monk who watches his every move; the other involves his best friend, Jon. In Bill’s hands these secrets prove dangerous weapons. Handled carelessly, they trigger an event that threatens to haunt him for the rest of his life.
